In the swing in Victoria

Feature in The Australian

A manicured arc of white sand stretches out from my feet and curls high above my head, like a wave threatening to break. Beyond the crest of this monster, I spy a hint of colour – the top of a small yellow flag, flapping in the breeze. Wriggling my feet, I sink into the grit, eyes fixed on a small, white orb in the sand. I grip my club, close my eyes and swing.

I’m standing in a sand trap known as Big Bertha, a bunker (a “pot”, for those in the know) on Kingston Heath Golf Course’s famous par-three 15th hole – reportedly a favourite of Tiger Woods’s – whose vertiginous 4m walls have brought unstuck some of the world’s best.
