OCM were appointed as the consultant architects to The Stanwich Club in late 2022. Originally designed by the father and son team of William and David Gordon, our early work involved the creation of a full Masterplan for the course, plus a new short course on a recently acquired pocket of land adjacent to the clubhouse. At roughly 24 acres and commanding wonderful views of Long Island Sound, the new land offers a number of interesting design options, but our preferred concept is a 9-hole short course, affectionately referred to as ‘The Cauldron’.
Our first project has included the redesign of two par threes on the main course – the 8th and 16th. The latter hole was laid out over some terrific ground for golf, with a creek-line running the length of the hole. Part of our redesign has included bringing this further into play and adding some rockwork as an aesthetic feature and a nod to the beautiful stone walls with proliferate the region. 8 and 16 both opened for play in early 2025.
Our second major project has been the short course construction which started in late 2024 and is expected to be grassed by Summer 2025 with the chance of some preview play in Fall.
Stanwich, known more commonly as ‘The Witch’ to its members, was ranked inside the top 100 courses in America 30 years from 1969-’80 and 1987-2004 and we hope to see it returned at some point in the future
